10 Dispensary Marketing Ideas That Bring In Local Customers

Most dispensaries can’t buy their way into a new customer’s phone. Google and Meta don’t allow cannabis ads, and state rules limit what you can say almost everywhere else. So the dispensaries that grow tend to win on the channels they control: Google Maps, their own website, reviews, and repeat customers.
These ideas all work within those limits. Check your state’s rules before you run any of them, since advertising and promotion rules vary a lot.
1. Treat your Google Business Profile like a storefront
When someone searches “dispensary near me,” the map results come first. Your Google Business Profile decides whether you show up there and whether people pick you.
Fill out every field. Keep hours accurate, including holidays. Add real photos of the store, not stock images. Link to your menu. Post updates regularly. Answer the questions people ask on your profile before someone else does. More on how we handle local SEO

2. Give every location its own page
If you have more than one store, each one needs its own page on your site. Include the address, hours, phone number, parking details, and what makes that location different. A single “locations” page listing every store makes it hard to rank in each city.
3. Make sure your menu can actually rank
This one catches a lot of dispensaries. Many menu tools load your products in an iframe or on the menu provider’s own domain. That can mean Google credits those product pages to someone else, or doesn’t index them at all.
Ask your menu provider whether they offer an SEO-friendly option that puts product pages on your own domain. If they do, use it. If they don’t, build category pages on your site for the things people search for, like flower, pre-rolls, and edibles, and link into the menu from there. We check menus and age gates in every cannabis SEO project we take on

4. Build a steady review habit
Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking factors and the first thing a new customer reads. Ask every customer. Make it easy with a short link or QR code at checkout. Reply to every review, good and bad.
Don’t offer discounts or freebies in exchange for reviews. Google’s policies prohibit incentivized reviews, and it can remove them or penalize your profile.
5. Fix your age gate
Age gates are required in most markets, but a badly built one can block search engines from seeing your site. If the gate stops the page from loading until someone clicks, Google may see a blank page. A gate that sits on top of the content as an overlay usually avoids that. Ask your developer which one you have.
6. Run a loyalty program
A customer who comes back monthly is worth far more than one first visit. Points, tiers, or member pricing all work. Many states have specific rules on discounts and promotions, so check yours before you design the program.
7. Use SMS and email carefully
Text and email are the most direct way to reach customers about new products and in-store events. Make sure people opt in clearly, follow federal texting consent rules, and check that your messaging provider allows cannabis content. Many mainstream providers don’t.

8. Publish local education content
New customers have questions. What’s the difference between product types? What should a first-time buyer know? What are the possession limits in your state? Pages that answer these well bring in searchers and build trust before they ever walk in.
Stay away from health claims. Describe products and how people use them. Don’t promise effects. Our CBD marketing guide covers how to write about products without making claims.
9. Get mentioned in your community
Local news, neighborhood blogs, and community event listings all build awareness and earn links that help you rank. Sponsor or host events where your state allows it. Partner with local businesses where it’s legal and makes sense.
10. Show up in AI search
More people now ask ChatGPT or Gemini for a dispensary recommendation. Those tools rely on clear information about your business across your site, your Google profile, and other listings. Keep your name, address, hours, and phone number identical everywhere. Answer common questions directly on your site. You can’t force an AI tool to recommend you, but you can make your business easy to understand.
Frequently asked questions
Can dispensaries advertise on Google or Facebook?
No. Both platforms prohibit ads for THC cannabis products and dispensaries. CBD brands get a little more room; see what Google and Meta allow for CBD ads . That’s why local SEO and Google Maps matter so much for dispensaries.
What’s the most important marketing channel for a dispensary?
For most, it’s Google Maps. Most new customers find a dispensary through a local search, and the map results come first.
How do I get my dispensary to show up in “near me” searches?
A complete Google Business Profile, a page for each location, steady reviews, and consistent business information across the web. Distance matters too, so you’ll rank best in the areas closest to each store.
